Hyundai’s Santa Fe has made a name for itself in the midsize SUV market with its combination of value, interior space, and features. Now, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the Santa Fe offers even more value, with the same price as Toyota’s compact RAV4 Prime plug-in but with midsize cabin space. But what about performance? The plug-in Santa Fe comes with a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is also found in the regular Santa Fe hybrid. However, the PHEV version comes with a more powerful electric motor that brings a total system output of 261 horsepower, which is 35 horsepower more than the regular hybrid. The PHEV also comes with a larger battery than the regular hybrid, which gives it an all-electric range of 31 miles.

During testing, the Santa Fe PHEV proved to be significantly quicker than the regular hybrid, with a 0-60 mph time of 7.0 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 15.2 seconds at 93.1 mph. However, it wasn’t as fast as the non-hybrid 2.5T, which made 60 in 6.2 seconds and ran the quarter in 14.6. The PHEV also performed well in the figure-eight test, with good handling and predictable power surges.

Despite weighing 4,496 pounds, which is some 270 pounds heavier than the regular hybrid and just over 200 pounds heavier than the 2.5T, the PHEV still managed to deliver good braking performance, stopping from 60 mph in 125 feet. Additionally, the PHEV was able to deliver power smoothly and evenly across the rev range, thanks to the electric motor.

Overall, the Santa Fe PHEV offers good performance for a vehicle in its class, with a spacious and high-luxe interior and a commutable all-electric range that can eliminate the need for gasoline in many cases.
